Joey Challenge Award

Joey Scout Program
The Achievement Pathways is a continuous series of personal achievements across the whole program, from the beginning of the Joey Scout Section through to the end of the Rover Scout Section.
The Achievement Pathways are characterised by the pathway around, and up a mountain with achievements identified through a series of uniform badges.
The Joey Scout Challenge Award system is a structured pathway designed for young Joey Scouts to develop their skills, achieve milestones, and earn recognition through various activities. It’s made up of several interconnected components, each contributing to the overall journey of the Joey Scout.
Key Components of the Award System
1 Program Essentials
Milestone 1, 2, and 3
These milestones mark progress in the Joey Scout’s development and are the foundation of the program. Each milestone requires completing certain activities and experiences within the Joey Scout program.
Introduction to Joey Scout Section & Scouting
Before starting the milestones, Joey Scouts must first be introduced to the Joey Scout Section and to Scouting, ensuring they have a solid understanding of what scouting is all about.
2. Outdoor Adventure Skills
Core Skills
Joey Scouts are required to complete Stage 1 in three core outdoor skills:
- Bushcraft
- Bushwalking
- Camping
Specialist Option
In addition to the core skills, Scouts have the opportunity to complete a stage in a specialist outdoor skill of their choice (e.g., aquatics, cycling, or other adventure skills).
3. Special Interest Areas
Joey Scouts must complete six activities across at least two of the Special Interest Areas. These activities must each be at least 2 hours in duration. The Special Interest Areas cover a broad range of topics, such as:
- Environment
- Creating a Better World
- STEM & Innovation
- Growth and Development
- Adventure & Sport
- Arts & Literature
4. Adventurous Journey
Joey Scouts must participate in a 3-hour adventurous journey. This journey encourages them to explore new environments, build independence, and reflect on their experiences in nature or in challenging outdoor settings.
5. Personal Reflection
After completing the core activities, outdoor adventure skills, special interest areas, and the adventurous journey, Joey Scouts must engage in personal reflection. This reflection allows them to think about what they have learned throughout their journey, how they have grown, and how their experiences have shaped them.
6. Joey Scout Challenge Award
The culmination of the award system is the Joey Scout Challenge Award. Once all the components (milestones, skills, special interest areas, adventurous journey, and personal reflection) are completed, the Scout earns this prestigious award. It recognizes their dedication, effort, and development through the Joey Scout program.
Achieving the Joey Scout Challenge Award means the Scout has developed a wide range of skills, gained meaningful experiences, and contributed to their personal growth and understanding of the scouting values.
