Australian Scout Award

Scout Program

The Achievement Pathways is a continuous series of personal achievements across the whole program, from the beginning of the Scout Section through to the end of the Rover Scout Section.

The Achievement Pathways are characterised by the pathway around, and up a mountain with achievements identified through a series of uniform badges.

The Scout Challenge Award system is a structured pathway designed for young Scouts to develop their skills, achieve milestones, and earn recognition through various activities. It’s made up of several interconnected components, each contributing to the overall journey of the Scout.

Key Components of the Award System

1 Program Essentials

Milestone 1, 2, and 3

These milestones represent key stages in a Scout’s development and are fundamental to the program. Each milestone involves completing specific activities and experiences within the Scout program, designed to encourage growth, skill development, and leadership.

Introduction to Scout Section & Scouting

Before beginning the milestones, Scouts are introduced to the Scout Section and Scouting itself. This ensures they have a solid understanding of the principles, expectations, and opportunities within the program, laying the foundation for their journey ahead.

2. Outdoor Adventure Skills

Core Skills

Scouts must complete Stage 5 in three core Outdoor Adventure Skills:

  • Bushcraft
  • Bushwalking
  • Camping

In addition to mastering these core skills, Scouts must achieve a total of 10 progressions across all outdoor adventure skills, including these core areas. This requirement ensures Scouts continuously develop and build upon their outdoor competencies.

Specialist Option

Scouts can further enhance their skills by completing additional stages in specialist outdoor activities, such as aquatics, cycling, or other adventure skills, tailored to their personal interests.

3. Special Interest Areas

Scouts must complete 6 projects across different Special Interest Areas, with each project lasting at least 8 hours. These projects allow Scouts to explore their personal interests, develop new skills, and contribute to the community or their group. The variety of areas encourages Scouts to broaden their horizons and engage in activities that align with their passions.

The Special Interest Areas for Scouts focus on six distinct fields where they complete projects. These areas typically include:

  • Environment
  • Creating a Better World
  • STEM & Innovation
  • Growth and Development
  • Adventure & Sport
  • Arts & Literature

4. Adventurous Journey

Scouts must participate in a 3 day 2 night adventurous journey. This journey encourages them to explore new environments, build independence, and reflect on their experiences in nature or in challenging outdoor settings.

5. Personal Reflection

After completing the core activities, outdoor adventure skills, special interest areas, and the adventurous journey, Scouts must engage in personal reflection. This reflection allows them to think about what they have learned throughout their journey, how they have grown, and how their experiences have shaped them.

6. Cub Australian Scout Award

The culmination of the award system is the Cub Australian Scout Award. Once all the components (milestones, skills, special interest areas, adventurous journey, and personal reflection) are completed, the Scout earns this prestigious award. It recognizes their dedication, effort, and development through the Scout program.

Achieving the Cub Australian Scout Award means the Scout has developed a wide range of skills, gained meaningful experiences, and contributed to their personal growth and understanding of the scouting values.
